About Sean Lockyear

Sean started competing in Rallies in 1981 at the age of 17.  This started originally with road events across the UK until he turned 18 and first competed in a stage rally.

His career at this time was centered on competing in the original Golf GTi that at the time he was selling in his family VW business in Surrey and Sussex.  Quickly he came the the notice of John Taylor, who was managing the British Junior Rally Team, and after having been assesed in a number of events and training sessions he was selected to represent Great Britain in a number of International Rallies in the early to mid 1980's.  He also attracted support from Volkswagen UK and campainged with great success a MK2 Volkswagen Golf GTi GroupA car in the British Open Championship in 1986.  During this period Sean was employed by VAG (UK) Ltd to instruct on the Volkswagen and Audi Quattro high performance driving programmes. He then turned to saloon car racing - again in a trusty Golf.  This time a 16v Group N (Production saloon) specification, with much success.

Next came a move to something completely different with a purchase of a Caterham with a 2.0 Vauxhall engine and racing in the a number of British and European Caterham race's.  It was then that Sean first experienced the legendary Nurburgring Nordshleife and was immeditely determined to become an expert in this fascinating circuit.  He began travelling frequently from his home, at the time, in West Sussex to Nurburg over 3 years to increase his knowledge of the circuit and then began racing there firstly competing in a 4 hour race in a Honda Blackbird engined Caterham then later that year competing in the legendary 24hr race in the same car.

The following year Sean was invited to compete in the 24hr race with a newly built car and again finished very well against more sophisticated machinery. More recently he has raced a 1965 FIA Historic Mustang in a number of Touring car races at Nurburgring and even competed in a VW Fun CUP Beetle aswell. He has covered thousands of laps in many kinds of cars and has instructed beginners and more experienced drivers at the legendary Nordschleife circuit.  Sean currently competes in historic rallies in a 3.0 litre RS Porsche, both in the UK and abroad.  Seans massive experience and ability to communicate make him ideal to instruct here in the UK and abroad.
